As we welcome the holiday season and the many festivities that will overtake our calendars, we should also tackle the difficult conversation of seasonal depression. To bring awareness to seasonal affective disorder or SAD, we should also focus on major depression and how it can affect individuals every day of the year. Starting this series, October highlights the importance of identifying depressive signs within ourselves and those around us.
"About 15.5% of U.S. adults experience major depressive disorder in a given year." - National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)
Depression stems from varying factors and is often developed by a mix of these factors. According to NAMI, trauma, genetics, life circumstances such as financial status, living situation, or personal loss can contribute to depression. Brain changes, medical conditions, and substance abuse can also contribute to depression. source
Depression appears in different ways as some may show signs while others may not show signs at all. It is important to provide the right support for those surrounding us, letting them know they have someone to lean on.
